Italian Bracelets The origin of the term bracelet derives from the Latin brachile wrist (arm), through the French Barcel. The earliest forms of bracelets date to the Bronze Age, and consisted of simple circles made of various materials. The bracelets are present in almost all the archaeological sites, especially those in European and Middle East. Neolitic cuff appears as a circle of round tape or bronze, sometimes meeting the ends with figurative themes. In the age of the iron, metals were constructed of various alloys including gold and silver. Bracelets were popular in ancient Egypt as early as 5000 BC, made of bone, stone or wood, and had primarily a religious and spiritual significance. The bracelet scarab is one of the most recognizable symbols of ancient Egypt, since the beetle showed the rebirth and regeneration. Various types of bracelets were used in ancient Rome, even if the derivation seems to be Etruscan. The armillae bracelets were worn by soldiers in the left arm as a symbol of military valor, while the patricians used the destrali on their right arm. Bracelets were also shaped as reptiles worn by women above the elbow. Both in ancient Greece and Hellenistic art, but also in the Assyrian art, was a widespread form of open circle bracelet decorated at either end with a pair of animal heads, usually goat or lion. If the Middle Ages the use of the wrist bracelet suffered a decline but during the Renaissance came into vogue, also facilitated by the short sleeve style of that period. In Latin America, Azabache bracelet was worn as protection from mal de ojo, or evil eye. Infants were made to wear the Azabache (a gold bracelet), so they were protected. In Bulgaria, a tradition called Martenitsa would you have wear a white band around your wrist so that Baba Marta did come spring. In some parts of India, the number and type of bangles worn by a woman indicates her marital status. Currently, the bracelets are worn by men and women equally as clothing accessories. |
