Italian Earrings An earring is a piece of jewelry that is worn on the ear. It is worn by both males and females, although, until recently, the use of earrings was a cultural distinction typically female. The earrings are usually attached to the ears through holes in the lobes, or through the use of clips that allow you to avoid piercing the earlobe. The earrings can be made of many materials such as metal, plastic, glass, gems, etc. But it is essential that the material is hypoallergenic to avoid skin irritation. Earrings come in all shapes and sizes, limited only by the capacity of the earlobe to support the earring without tearing, because people who wear very heavy earrings may face, gradually, the trend towards expansion and tear of the hole in the lobe. The earrings are worn throughout the world in many different cultures, it is often considered a common practice, sometimes almost a rite of social initiation (similar to a symbolic level, circumcision or infibulation), to drill holes in the ears of little girls after birth. Although not as common for women, ear piercings have become fairly common in North America and Europe. Men usually wear a earring on the left ear, following a tradition already in place in the nineteenth century in the British merchant navy, while the men in the British war navy put it on the right ear. It seems that wearing an earring on the left ear is an anarchist symbol. The Pirates put the earring to "catch the light." In places with poor visibility, such as below deck, the earring of gold reflected light and the source of any pirate could be located. Others say they put it as a symbol of recognition, a kind of uniform. Other sources claim that the gold earring for the sailors had a practical value, it would be used to pay funeral expenses in cases where the sailor had died away from home. |
