Italian Rings A ring is a strip of metal or other material worn on a finger as an ornament. Although the word ring has several other meanings, this is the most common in current usage. Worn by men and women equally, the rings can be made of metal, plastic, wood, bone, glass or other materials. May include embedded into the main material, precious stones or small works of art in enamel or other materials. The rings can be worn on any finger, even if Western culture prevails in the use of the ring, especially for an engagement ring. In the latter case, in particular, the ring is worn on the left hand (with some exceptions). The origin of the ring is very old and dates back to the Bronze Age, and already in the Cretan-Mycenaean civilization became a precious object and created with great care. Around 1800 BC emerged the use of the ring-seal of Mesopotamian derivation as a form of seal to documents, from which derives the symbolic meaning of authority such those worn by high priests. Its round shape does identify as a symbol of eternity. In ancient Rome the right to adorn themselves with rings of iron was initially granted only to the priests of Jupiter with the passage of time, however, that honor was extended to knights and senators but used gold rings. Since Roman times it was used in engagements and weddings as a wish for stability, with the name of vinculum and anulus pronubus, significance was maintained intact even in later eras. The same value of stability and honor is awarded to the rings used in heraldry. Break a loop, therefore, it symbolizes the breaking of any oath or a foreshadowing of disaster. In a more limited sense, the ring is the symbol of material life on earth, for this example the Fisherman's ring of the pope, since the introduction of Clement IV in 1265, his death is broken, and a time to death of a spouse, they used to remove the rings to allow its separation from the earth. The identification between the ring and life, is also found in ancient Carthaginian custom to deliver to their commanders so many rings as there were casualties inflicted on the enemy. Rings, especially when equipped with precious stones, are assigned healing powers of protection against disease or otherwise curses. In folk legends and fairy tales, the rings often provide supernatural occult powers to the wearer. Fantasy sagas often include magic rings, in particular "The Lord of the Rings." |
