Italy is predominantly a Roman Catholic country. Old church traditions and folklore still dictate the time and hour marriages should take place. May is avoided because the month is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. August is considered unpropitious, as it invites sickness and ill luck. Nor will a marriage be held during Advent or the Lenten season.
Sundays are the luckiest day of the week. To court luck, the groom will carry a piece of iron in his pocket during the wedding to forestall the envy of supernatural forces and to ward off the evil eye.
